Captain Marvel Soars to the Top of the Box Office for a 2nd Week
Mar 17, 2019 - 7:20 PM - by Evil Avatar

Captain Marvel dominated her indie cohorts to finish at the top of the Weekend Boxoffice Chart for a second weekend, moving herself into the coveted 11th place for Marvel movies overall.

Here is the Weekend Boxoffice Chart for the weekend of March 15th to March 17th, 2019.
  1. Captain Marvel $69.3/$266.2
  2. Wonder Park $16.0/$16.0
  3. Five Feet Apart $13.1/$13.1
  4. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World $9.3/$135.6
  5. Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral $8.0/$59.0
  6. No Manches Frida 2 $3.8/$3.8
  7. Captive State $3.1/$3.1
  8. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part $2.1/$101.3
  9. Alita: Battle Angel $1.9/$81.8
  10. Green Book $1.2/$82.6
  11. Isn't It Romantic $1.2/$46.3
  12. Apollo 11 $1.2/$5.5
While I joke, it is still important to note that despite the constant media barrage about Captain Marvel, the film isn't doing that great compared to other Marvel movies. It has yet to even beat Guardians of the Galaxy 2, the 10th best Marvel movie.

Disney Reloads Gunn for Guardians 3
Mar 15, 2019 - 12:45 PM - by Terran

Gunn back on for Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

After a series of meetings with Walt Disney Pictures honcho Alan Horn, fired director James Gunn will return to the Marvel fold.

Gunn has been re-hired to direct the third installment in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise, the Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana series about misfits who protect outer-space, an individual familiar with the project told Variety.

Gunn was fired last July following the resurfacing of offensive tweets that made light of child sex abuse. The director apologized for the sentiments, which were bubbled up by conservative talking head Mike Cernovich, but was swiftly chopped by family-friendly Disney over the graphic and immature nature of his comments.

The studio had never replaced him with any other director on the project, another insider added. Leadership is said to be satisfied with his contrition. Gunn will also write the screenplay for the third installment, which is undated but slated for 2020. Aside from the notable reversal of a swift decision, Gunn’s rehire presents a conflict of superhero proportions — he’s currently in talks to write and direct a sequel of “Suicide Squad,” the DC Comics villain franchise.
So, how do you feel about this?

New Content and Features in the Release Version

The whole story of the game will be accessible for the first time! We've used Early Access to fine tune all mechanics of the game and will add the most important part now: The Story. Why did the apocalypse happen? Where does the infection come from, that spreads all over the lands? What happend to Ash's family? Now you can find it out!

Survival Handbook

Added the survival book where players can look-up game and survival mechanics. This is a new feature that helps the players to better familiarize themselves with the game. As new features are introduced, a new entry will be added to the survival book which players can look-up at any time in the game.

A brand new tutorial

Surviving in the post-apocalypse is hard and challenging. We've overhauled the tutorial from scratch, to make the first steps into the unknown world easier for new players and to give a new hint or two to veteran players, too.

Dream a little dream...

When Ash rests, he can have vision-like dreams, where he deals with the inner voice and will learn more about the world and the story. Of course each of these sequences can be experienced again via the new dream gallery to make sure, you don't lose connection with the story if you haven't played for a little while.

• Implemented final story line, telling the story of Ash, his daughter Alice and the apocalypse

• Implemented dream sequences when main character (Ash) is resting

• Completely overhauled tutorial phase in the beginning of the game. Optimized on-boarding of first-time players.

• Added the survival handbook where players can look-up game and survival mechanics

• Added dream gallery where players can watch the unlocked dream sequences in chronological order.

No Man’s Sky Beyond Announced, Coming Summer 2019
Mar 15, 2019 - 7:29 AM - by Evil Avatar

Hello everyone, we know that there is a lot of hunger out there for news and updates on No Man’s Sky. We wanted to share some information from behind the scenes. Our next chapter will be called No Man’s Sky Beyond, coming Summer 2019.

Each chapter for No Man’s Sky has been more successful than the last. Thanks to our community, our large release last year, NEXT, was especially so. It went on to bring enjoyment to millions of new players, and it helped to change the legacy of this game we care so much about.

Earlier this year, while working on our roadmap of three future updates, we decided we wanted to interweave their features, and had a vision for something much more impactful. We are excited to announce that Beyond will contain those three major updates rolled into one larger free release.

The first component of Beyond we are announcing today is No Man’s Sky Online.

No Man’s Sky Online includes a radical new social and multiplayer experience which empowers players everywhere in the universe to meet and play together. While this brings people together like never before, and has many recognizable online elements, we don’t consider No Man’s Sky to be an MMO — it won’t require a subscription, won’t contain microtransactions, and will be free for all existing players.

These changes are an answer to how we have seen people playing since the release of NEXT, and is something we’ve dreamed of for a long time. We will talk more about each component when we know we can be precise, and look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks.

Beyond will be our most ambitious chapter so far, and something we’ve been working ridiculously hard on. We’ll continue to support No Man’s Sky in this way for the foreseeable future.

It’s unexpected but so rewarding to see so many accolades and nominations for No Man’s Sky as Best On-going or Most Evolved this year. To some NEXT may have felt like a natural end-point for our journey, but for us it was another step on a longer voyage.

EA Skipping E3 2019

EA PLAY 2019: It’s All About the Games

2019 will mark our fourth year of EA PLAY. What we envisioned as a celebration of play has become an incredible moment that we love to share with the community each year. We are so grateful for all our fans who have joined us, and we look forward to making this year an even better experience.

This year you’ll see less talk and more play, with an event entirely focused on the heartbeat of EA PLAY: our player communities and the games they love.

• First hands-on with some of our biggest games.

• Exclusive content from some of the most popular creators in the world.

• Free for all to attend.

It all starts this year on Friday night, June 7, 2019, with an all-new EA PLAY kickoff event. We're skipping the press conference this year and are replacing it with multiple live streams that will air during the first two days of the event, bringing you more of what you've told us you want - more gameplay and insights from the teams making the games.

Weekends are meant for play, and this year we’ve moved the EA PLAY fanfest to Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9 where players will get hands-on with our games. We’ll also have content creators streaming live from our Creator’s Cave in the Hollywood Palladium providing gameplay content to our players viewing online. EA.com will be the home for all online EA PLAY content. Players can get behind-the-scenes with our games via exclusive gameplay reveals, developer talks and breaking news.

But that’s enough talk for now, we’ve got plenty more to show in the months ahead.

Tickets will be available next month, so stay tuned over the coming weeks and months to learn more about EA PLAY 2019, including the games, ticket availability, program schedule and more.

The Evil Avatar Anthem Review
Mar 05, 2019 - 7:00 AM - by Evil Avatar

BioWare has released their new Destiny-killer, Anthem. It's from beloved Mass Effect studio BioWare, it has to be good, right? Writer Aaron Birch has a slightly different view in his review of Anthem.

Simply put, Anthem has disappointed in almost every single way possible, being as it is a shallow, shell of a game that features repetitive, uninspired missions, dull enemies, boring and extremely limited weapons and loot to pick up, limited customisation options, an open world that looks the same throughout, and the usual microtransaction ugliness.

‘Friday the 13th: The Game” Coming to Nintendo Switch This Spring
Mar 04, 2019 - 6:48 AM - by Evil Avatar

“Friday the 13th: The Game” is coming to Nintendo Switch this Spring with the release of “Friday the 13th: The Game Ultimate Slasher Switch Edition,” developer Gun Media tells Variety.

The upcoming edition includes all released content and paid DLC, including every Jason Kill Pack, both Counselor Clothing Packs, and the Emote Party Pack. It does not the include Kickstarter backer exclusive “Savini Jason” character or the backer exclusive clothing pack.

“We’re happy to be bringing ‘Friday the 13th: The Game’ to the Nintendo Switch with the help of our partners at Black Tower and Nighthawk. The Nintendo Switch offers a unique experience, in both social settings and on the go, that we feel work very well with ‘Friday the 13th: The Game,'” said Daniel Nixon, Gun Media’s Director of Communications.

“Friday the 13th” was originally funded via Kickstarter and released in 2017 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Last year developer Gun Media confirmed it would no longer be releasing new DLC content to the game due to a legal battle over the “Friday the 13th” franchise instigated by the original screenwriter, Victor Miller. Miller is attempting to reclaim the rights to his original characters that were used in the 1980 original movie and subsequent releases.

PlayStation Plus Games for March 2019 Announced
Feb 28, 2019 - 6:05 AM - by Evil Avatar

PlayStation Plus: Free Games for March 2019

Two brand new titles join the PlayStation Plus free game lineup on March 5, offering dramatically different gameplay experiences. Let’s take a look.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered

Activision’s colossal Call of Duty series is truly part of the fabric of modern gaming, and it was in 2007 that developer Infinity Ward took the console world by storm with its contemporary spin on the popular action series it helped create. 2016’s Modern Warfare Remastered brought the classic back in full HD for a new generation of gamers, while respectfully retaining its first-class gunplay and brilliant level design.

Download it with PS Plus this month to relive a true FPS classic (in glorious dynamic 4K on PS4 Pro when played on a PS4 Pro system and a 4K display).

The Witness

From the developer of the charming puzzle-platformer Braid back in 2008, creator Jonathan Blow promptly returned to the drawing board and spent the next eight years working on an ambitious follow-up.

The result was 2016’s The Witness — an enigmatic first-person puzzler set on a seemingly-deserted tropical island, dotted from one end to the other with a vast network of interconnected puzzles.

Boasting spellbinding narrative twists and an unbeatable sense of satisfaction in conquering each puzzle, The Witness is a benchmark in design and environmental storytelling. Download The Witness on PS Plus this month for a slow-burning test of the old grey matter.

Both titles will be available to download from PlayStation Store from March 5 to April 1, 2019.

Finally, the PS Plus specials this month have some great titles including Yakuza Kiwami 2 at 40% off and both Hollow Knight and Just Cause 4 at 50% off. Act fast! The PS Plus specials for February are available until March 5, 2019.

Pokémon Sword and Shield Announced for Nintendo Switch!
Feb 27, 2019 - 7:06 AM - by Evil Avatar

During a Pokémon Direct presentation today, Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company, announced Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, the next installments in the main series of Pokémon role-playing video games. Developed by GAME FREAK inc., Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield will debut exclusively on the Nintendo Switch in late 2019.

The two new titles will take place in the Galar region, an expansive region with diverse environments— an idyllic countryside, contemporary cities, thick forest, and craggy, snow-covered mountains. The people and the Pokémon who live there work together closely to develop the industries in the region. Fans will have the opportunity to visit various Gyms in the Galar region in their quest to become Champion. They will not be alone, since the newly discovered Pokémon they choose to be their first partner will be by their side.

“Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are the latest exciting adventures in the Pokémon video game journey that began twenty-three years ago on this day,” said Mr. Ishihara. “Since then, Trainers around the world have discovered new Pokémon, engaged in epic battles, and made countless memories along the way. We look forward to continuing this journey by exploring a stunning new region in the Pokémon universe when the games launch later this year on Nintendo Switch.”

The adventure begins in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield when players choose one of three new Pokémon—Grookey, a Grass-type Chimp Pokémon, is mischievous and full of boundless curiosity; Scorunny, Bursting with energy, a Fire-type Rabbit Pokémon, is always running about; and the stealthy Sobble, a Water-type Water Lizard Pokémon, shoots out attacks as it hides itself in water.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead Cancelled
Feb 27, 2019 - 6:18 AM - by Evil Avatar

An Update on Overkill’s The Walking Dead

Today Skybound Entertainment released the following statement:

As of today, we have terminated our contract with Starbreeze Studios and will discontinue all efforts on Overkill’s The Walking Dead. Our creators and their stories are the core of Skybound, and since 2014 we have worked hard to expand the world of The Walking Dead into an exceptional Co-op Action FPS. We did our best to work with Starbreeze and resolve many issues that we saw with the game, but ultimately Overkill’s The Walking Dead did not meet our standards nor is it the quality that we were promised. We are exceedingly sorry to our fans and share their disappointment in the game. We remain dedicated to providing our fans with the most premium quality content we can offer, and will continue to look for alternative video game options for the IP.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead expected to be unavailable for purchase on Steam due to disagreement with licence holder

Skybound, the license holder of Overkill’s The Waling Dead, has filed a license related complaint with the main digital distribution platform for the Starbreeze game Overkill’s The Walking Dead. As a consequence, the product is expected to be removed from new purchases on Steam within a near future. Starbreeze and Skybound are in discussions about the agreement and Starbreeze is trying to resolve the issue to find an amicable solution with the ambition to finish and deliver season 2 of the game, as previously communicated.

“We are deeply sorry for the issues this may cause anyone who has bought the game looking forward to the resolution of Season 2 and are working urgently to attempt to resolve the issue. Please keep an eye on the official OTWD channels for further news,” said Mikael Nermark, Acting CEO Starbreeze.

Funcom (Conan Exiles) signs on to develop DUNE games
Feb 27, 2019 - 6:15 AM - by Evil Avatar

Conan Exiles developer Funcom has signed a deal to make new games set in Frank Herbert's Dune universe.

According to Funcom's investor announcement, the deal - a partnership with Legendary Studios, a division of Legendary Entertainment, which owns the movie and television rights to Dune - will last six years, and is expected to result in the release of "at least" three new titles across PC and consoles.

Funcom hasn't offered specifics for the majority of titles in the works, but does say that one is an open-world multiplayer game scheduled to enter pre-production at its Oslo studio this year. That suggests something similar to Conan Exiles, just with big worms instead of big dongs.

#ThimbleweedPark free on Epic Games Store
Feb 26, 2019 - 9:59 PM - by brandonjclark

Terrible Toybox's Thimbleweed Park is FREE TO DOWNLOAD for a limited time on the Epic Games Store. I think it's a fantastically-written (read:funny) and FUN point and click adventure game. It will quickly remind you of those old great adventure games like The Secret of Monkey Island and King's Quest, with some of the former game's developers descending from that original development team.

If you grew up playing adventure games, prepare to feel nostalgic with this one in the best way!

I'd first like to say I'm sorry for no update last week. Life has been busy for me, but that said I did spend eight hours working on the game over the last two days. I don't have a lot of screen shots to show, nor any video because I've broken most of the code as I continue to tweak certain areas of the engine.

GOG has laid off 'around a dozen' Employees
Feb 26, 2019 - 6:45 AM - by Evil Avatar

Digital distribution platform GOG has confirmed with Kotaku that it laid off roughly a dozen people last week. A reason for the cuts wasn't provided, but one of the employees who was let go told Kotaku that staff were told it was "a financial decision."

"We have been rearranging certain teams since October 2018, effecting in closing around a dozen of positions last week," the company said in a statement. "At the same time, since the process started we have welcomed nearly twice as many new team members, and currently hold 20 open positions."

In contrast to that rosy framing, the former employee said that GOG is "dangerously close to being in the red," and suggested that the trend toward a greater revenue share for developers—the Epic Game Store offers 88 percent of revenues to developers, compared to the 70 percent offered by GOG and Steam—will soon put pressure on GOG's bottom line, or already has.

"I mean, it’s just an odd situation, like things got really desperate really fast. I know that February was a really bad month, but January on the other hand was excellent," the employee said. "We were in the middle of a general restructuring, moving some teams around, not unprecedented. But layoffs that big have never happened before."
