Do Metal Jesus Rocks Videos Affect Retro Game Prices?
May 20, 2018 - 7:53 AM - by BeardedSonOfNel

Metal Jesus Rocks has over 500k subscribers and is known for posting videos of retro video games. Ranging from hidden gems to HDMI solutions, Metal Jesus has produced quality content for the past 8 years.

But when he posts these videos, he comes under fire for inflating the prices of the games he showcases. But no one really knows how much. Until Now.

I researched over 265 games that he's showcased over the past five years. In addition to the short term effect of his video, I also covered the long term effect on the pricing.

So how exactly does Metal Jesus Rocks influence retro video game prices? Find out!
I'm a personal fan of Metal Jesus, and thought this video was fair. It's not MJs fault prices do what they do, and if anything it show how much people value his opinion on games and hardware.

Digital Foundry: PC has an HDR support problem - and Nvidia wants to fix it
May 20, 2018 - 3:00 AM - by Emabulator

Are extreme spec 4K displays the answer? The Digital Foundry at Eurogamer has the story.

At the forefront of gaming technology pretty much since the year dot, the PC format has fallen behind in one key area: support for high dynamic range - the future of display technology. HDR screens for PC users are thin on the ground and often poorly specced, while the list of supported games stands at less than 50 per cent of the number found on consoles. Something has to change, and it starts by getting excellent PC desktop monitors out there. This week, Nvidia showed press its highly impressive 120Hz 4K HDR G-Sync technology. The specs of two upcoming HDR screens from Acer and Asus exceed what living room displays are capable of by quite a margin in some respects, and may help in beginning to address the lacklustre HDR take-up we've seen for PC users so far.

PC's lack of traction in HDR is something of a vicious circle. Consider Sea of Thieves by Rare - it features one of the most striking HDR implementations we've ever seen, enhancing the game's distinctive visuals considerably. However, it's only an option for Xbox users - there's no HDR support whatsoever on the PC side. On checking in with the developer about this, we were told that the lack of compatible displays meant that implementing it wasn't a priority. It's an excuse that frustrates us because, of course, PC is just as compatible with living room HDR displays as the consoles, but the divide between the living room and the den/office - each with their own type of display - is still, clearly, a thing... for now, at least.

House Flipper is about renovation, but without all the annoying “work”
May 19, 2018 - 7:04 PM - by Emabulator

PCGamesN has the story.

If you’ve ever spent an afternoon idly watching HGTV, you know the appeal of seeing a home come together, going from dilapidated wreck to chic living space. The one bummer about it is that doing it in real life requires a lot of physical labor. House Flipper, out now on Steam, gives you the satisfaction of being a Property Brother without all the muscle cramps and stubbed toes.

The game has been an under-the-radar darling of Steam’s Early Access and Greenlight programs for some time now, with prominent YouTubers dabbling in renovation here and there. Now that the full release is out, it’s gaining popularity quickly, and is currently sitting at number one on Steam’s top sellers list.

As you might expect, the goal is to clean and renovate homes and then sell them for a profit, and it gives you quite a few tools to work with. You’ll have to start out by doing simple jobs for homeowners, like cleaning up after messy tenants, or painting over obnoxious color schemes left by the previous occupants. Once you build up enough savings from doing odd jobs, you’ll be able to buy your own houses, which is where the real fun starts.

You can use a sledgehammer to knock down drywall partitions, replace electrical outlets and plumbing fixtures, and completely refurnish your properties as you see fit, selling old furniture and adding new lighting schemes. Some of the places you'll walk into are real disaster areas, and fixing them up feels genuinely satisfying.
After reading that, I checked out House Flipper for myself. I can see why it's so popular. If it sounds like something you might like, you most likely will.

Far Cry 5 and Assassin’s Creed Origins Drive Record Sales for Ubisoft
May 19, 2018 - 3:50 PM - by Emabulator

MCV has the story.

Ubisoft has released its financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31st, 2018. Sales at the firm were up 18.6 per cent year-on-year, reaching €1,73bn (£1.51bn), above its initial target of €1.6bn (£1.3bn).

Digital did particularly well, with 58 per cent of Ubisoft’s sales now being digital against 50 per cent in the previous fiscal year. Mobile revenue was up 66.2 per cent year-on-year.

Ubisoft’s back-catalog kept delivering strong results in the last fiscal year, representing 47.7 per cent of the total sales compared to 44.5 per cent the previous year.

Among the good performances reported by the firm, Far Cry 5 was Ubisoft’s biggest release ever with $310m (£229m) total players spending in its first week. Assassin’s Creed Origins had a “record performance for an Assassin’s Creed game in a fourth fiscal quarter,” Ubisoft’s report also said. Rainbow Six Siege also had record engagement in the last fiscal quarter, the firm reported, with now more than 30m players registered and esports viewership up by about 300 per cent for the Six Invitational.

State of Decay 2 Reviews "a steady drip of bugs and glitches"
May 19, 2018 - 7:55 AM - by Emabulator

IGN - 7.5/10

State of Decay 2’s zombie-infested maps are good places to scavenge, fight, and survive in. Combat is satisfyingly brutal and the special zombies inspire some real fear of permanent death, even though the Blood Plague turns out to be more of a sniffle. But the bugs are just as persistent as the zombies, and after a dozen or so hours the repetition of both eventually take their toll, making the appeal of replaying feel more limited than I’d expected for a sandbox RPG.
USgamer - 3.5/5

If you can deal with a healthy dose of bugs, State of Decay 2 is an extremely satisfying and unpredictable management sim with a solid action-survival game laid on top. The sequel's improved UI, new multiplayer component, and additional maps help it stand out from its predecessor, even if the moment-to-moment is largely the same.
Game Informer - 6.5/10

I ran into a steady drip of bugs and glitches during my solo experience. Some were funny, like watching zombies fall into the world while driving quickly on the roads (roads that, State of Decay veterans should know, now aren’t frequently littered with impassible blockades). Animations unfurl in goofy and unexpected ways. Others were less hilarious, like when items vanished or companions teleported back to base without any provocation. Those issues are magnified in co-op. Characters skitter around each other, barely able to keep up with their friends. Flashlights are basically broken. Cars disappear or warp onto their sides before bursting into flame. Zombies materialize within arm’s reach, and start chowing down on your character before you have time to react. I won’t recite the litany of problems; you’ll see plenty if you spend a few minutes playing the game.
VideoGamer - 6/10

State of Decay 2 has some lovely elements that will make you want to keep playing, and yet others that make you want to turn it off again, so you get caught in a fretful loop of not knowing what to do with yourself. Like some kind of restless corpse shuffling back and forth with no purpose, perhaps…?
GameSpot - 5/10

Perhaps if State of Decay 2 had the kind of depth that drew you in, these technical faults would be easier to overlook. But it’s because of the lack of meaningful motivations that they stick out so predominantly. State of Decay 2 settles into a rhythm that might be easy for you to pass some hours with, but it’s never a ride with genuine surprises, excitement or purpose. There’s promise in so many systems that it introduces, but they’re woefully underutilized to make space for repetitive activities that are nowhere near as exciting to engage with. State of Decay 2 feels like the lumbering enemies that populate its country mountains. Aimless, wandering, and just out of place.

GTA V Online Update Adds Battle Royale-Inspired Mode
May 18, 2018 - 3:17 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Rockstar has rolled out another batch of content for Grand Theft Auto V. Along with a new selection of in-game bonuses and discounts, the developer has introduced a new, battle royale-inspired Adversary mode for GTA Online called Trap Door, which is available to play now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Trap Door pits teams against each other on a floating platform that is shrinking "rapidly" throughout the match. Each time a player is killed, they are transported to the red zone, where they're given only a few seconds to escape to the main platform before the zone disappears and dumps everyone within into the ocean.

To commemorate the launch of Trap Door, everyone who participates in the new mode in the next few days will receive extra bonuses. From now until May 21, Trap Door is paying out double the usual amount of GTA$ and RP. You can jump into the mode either from the boot screen or by setting a waypoint to the Featured Adversary mode.

In addition to Trap Door, players will earn double GTA$ and RP for Biker Business Sell Missions, while Smuggler's Run missions will pay out double GTA$ this week. Those who also participated in last week's Business Week event will now find their bonus money waiting in their Maze Bank accounts.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Inexplicably Announced For 2021
May 16, 2018 - 7:58 AM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

Rather abruptly, a website for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 has appeared with an accompanying Facebook post announcing a 2021 release.

The website, which you can find here, is sparse on information beyond the title, a year of 2021, and an email address which had not responded to us yet at the time of writing. A separate Facebook post from Sergiy Grygorovych also appeared at the same time announcing the website launch.

Grygorovych is the founder of GSC Game World, the original developers of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. GSC Game World announced in the late 2000s that they were porting the series over to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but decided to move resources instead over to the creation of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 to make its 2012 release date. In December 2011, GSC Game World closed its doors for mysterious reasons, with the former S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 devs forming Vostok games. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was officially cancelled a few weeks later for, according to a Facebook post, problems getting the investors and rights holders to agree.

Now it seems like GSC Game World has returned to the series and is resuming or restarting development of the game. We have contacted the parties involved to try and trace back where exactly this game is coming from, but have yet to hear back. In the meantime, you should trace the lineage of the first title in the series, Shadow of Chernobyl, through our deep dive into the title here.

Zombieland 2 With Original Cast Is On The Way, Writers Say
May 16, 2018 - 7:46 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

The cult classic Zombieland, which came out in 2009, may be getting a sequel. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick--who wrote the original--told Vulture that a sequel with the original cast might be in theatres by October 2019 to celebrate the original's 10-year anniversary.

"We're going on the tenth anniversary of Zombieland,” Wernick said. "Zombieland came out October of 2009. We don't know what you get someone for their tenth anniversary, but it may be a Zombieland 2...with the original cast, by the way."

Zombieland starred Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, and Woody Harrelson, as well as Bill Murray in a wonderfully silly and morbid cameo. The movie, which was directed by Ruben Fleischer, made $102.4 million against a $23.6 million budget. It was generally well-liked by critics for its silly story and zombie-killing mayhem.

Wernick added that they will hopefully be able to share more news soon about the sequel, which will reportedly start shooting in early 2019.

"We are sitting on information that we can't entirely share at this moment," he said. "But we can just say we think fans of Zombieland who have been hoping for a Zombieland 2, that we will grant their wish very, very soon."

Metro Exodus Delayed into 2019
May 16, 2018 - 7:37 AM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

The Metro Exodus release date has been moved back from autumn 2018 to Q1 2019.

Publisher Deep Silver and developer 4A Games issued a joint statement this morning:

"The development of Metro Exodus is progressing well; we are all really excited by what we are seeing. We have been constantly reviewing the games progress to ensure that we deliver a product that gamers and fans of the Metro series want and deserve, as well as keeping an eye on announcements from our competitor products. We want everyone to be able to experience what is the most ambitious Metro game to date at its absolute best and therefore we have taken the decision to move the release date to Q1 2019.

"We know that this will be disappointing news for fans that had hoped to play the game this year, but also know that you will appreciate the results that this additional development time and new release date will bring. We would also like to take this opportunity to confirm that at E3 in June we will be revealing some brand new gameplay from a never before seen game environment for you to enjoy."

Shenmue 3 Delayed into 2019
May 16, 2018 - 7:06 AM - by Emabulator

PC Gamer has the story.

Shenmue 3 has been delayed until next year, publisher Deep Silver has announced. It was due to release during the second half of this year, but developer Ys Net will now take extra time to "polish the quality of the game even further, to the high standards it deserves and release the product in the best possible time frame".

Game director Yu Suzuki apologised for the delay in a Kickstarter post, saying: "After much discussion with our partners, Deep Silver, we have concluded that extending the release will allow us to deliver Shenmue III at its best. We promise to use this time to improve the quality of Shenmue III."

It's hardly a huge shock: Ys Net has already pushed it back once, having initially penciled in a late 2017 release date.

It was successfully crowdfunded to the tune of $6,333,295 in 2015, which made it the richest video game Kickstarter campaign of all time. We still know very little about it, but back in February we got a bunch of new screenshots showcasing the game's characters.

First Rage 2 Gameplay #Rage2
May 15, 2018 - 7:13 AM - by Evil Avatar

RAGE 2 – Announce & Gameplay Trailer

Mankind is in peril. In the decades following an asteroid’s devastation, most of the earth has become an unforgiving wildland where bloodthirsty factions vie for control of precious resources. Pockets of civilization have emerged to claim their space in the world, but the tentative peace they’ve established is being threatened. RAGE 2 follows Walker, the last Ranger of Vineland, as he fights to survive the chaos of the dystopian world into which he was born. With a wide array of weapons, vehicles and strange powers, Walker sets off to take down the tyrannical Authority. Get your first look at the insane action in the worldwide gameplay reveal trailer below and check out the live action teaser released on May 14 here. RAGE 2 will be launching on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in Spring, 2019.

The Open-World Shooterverse

It’s the perfect mix: id Software’s first-person shooter pedigree, Avalanche Studios’ mastery of the open world sandbox, with a healthy dose of pedal-to-the-metal vehicle combat. From the swamplands and jungles where enemies lurk among the dense foliage, to the open deserts where a passing car is more likely to mow you down than offer you a ride, the world of RAGE 2 is not a gentle, nurturing place. The people who have survived in this landscape have had to learn to protect themselves and keep their heads on a swivel, especially with the reemergence of a familiar menace.

As if the gangs and mutants aren’t enough, Walker also has to contend with the Authority, returning antagonists from the first game who threaten anything good remaining in the world. Led by General Cross, the Authority is on a renewed mission to hunt down the few remaining pureblood Arkists left in the world, and Cross is willing to slaughter everyone to achieve his goals. That’s where Walker’s wealth of unique guns and gear comes in – and he’ll need every one of his powerful weapons to defend the wild wasteland he calls home.

Walker, Vineland Ranger

A Ranger’s arsenal isn’t limited to the abundance of upgradeable weapons and toys at their disposal. Fueled by Arkist blood, these elite fighters are the only people in the world who can harness special Nanotrite abilities. However, this blood has also made them a target for the Authority, and after years of fighting, Walker is the only Ranger still standing.

Among the arrows he can choose from his Nanotrite ability quiver are the power to crush enemies into paste from above in a devastating slam attack or send them flying away from him with a lethal energy push. Walker will also learn to channel these Nanotrites into his weapons, pushing them into an awe-inspiring Overdrive, a unique skill that lets him push his guns beyond their limits and unleash absolute hell on his foes. Chain these abilities together to make Walker a powerhouse of destruction, quickly refilling his Overdrive meter. While in Overdrive, Walker’s guns do more damage, they gain new attributes, enemies drop better rewards and Walker’s health starts to regenerate. When timed correctly, Overdrive is more than enough to tip the scales in a tricky fight.

There’s a lot more to come for RAGE 2. Tune into the BE3 Showcase on Sunday, June 10, at 6:30pm PT for more gameplay and details. You can catch the stream live on Twitch, YouTube, Twitter or Facebook

EA's Latest PS4 And Xbox One Golf Game Is Being Removed From Sale Soon
May 15, 2018 - 5:45 AM - by Emabulator

Slice! GameSpot has the story.

It's the end of the road for EA's latest golf game. Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is being removed from all digital storefronts for PS4 and Xbox One on May 22, which is also when it'll be taken out of the EA Access free game "Vault" on Xbox One. It's just the second game to leave the service, following FIFA 14 last year.

The news comes by way of sports site Pasta Padre. The site surmises that this may have something to do with a licensing deal expiring. We have contacted EA in an attempt to get more details, and we'll update this story with anything we hear back.

Rory McIlory PGA Tour, like EA's previous Tiger Woods PGA Tour games, uses a lot of different licenses. The game features the likenesses of many professional golfers in addition to McIlroy, including Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, and Jason Dufner. There are also a number of real-world courses such as St. Andrews and TPC Sawgrass that require licensing. What's more, the presentation is voiced by broadcast TV veterans Rich Lerner and Frank Nobilo.

Even after losing Augusta National and bigger-name commentators like Jim Nantz from past games, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour likely incurred a significant and potentially complicated licensing situation that was probably always due to expire at some point.

Rory McIlroy PGA Tour launched in July 2015 to middling reviews and criticisms over its perceived lack of content at launch. More courses were added as free DLC after launch.

Boss Key Productions Shuts Down
May 14, 2018 - 5:21 PM - by Evil Avatar

CliffyB's Statement

As of today, Boss Key Productions is effectively no more.

Four years ago I set out to make a world class video game studio and I hired some of the best talent in the video game industry. They worked tirelessly to produce quality products and, while we had our ups and downs, I’d like to think we had fun doing it. LawBreakers was a great game that unfortunately failed to gain traction, and, in a last ditch attempt we scrambled to do our take on the huge battle royale genre with Radical Heights, which was well received, however, it was too little too late.

As for myself, I’m going to take some time off and reflect. I need to focus on myself and family as well as my Aussie, Teddy, who is slowly fading from us. Video games will forever be a part of who I am and I hope to make something new again someday, however, I need to withdraw and take this time.

To those of you who have supported myself and the studio these last four years, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart and everyone who came to work for me.

Please note that the servers for Radical Heights will remain up for the near future.

Thanks again, Cliff

Leaked Xbox One Controller To Help Gamers With Physical Limitations
May 14, 2018 - 3:41 PM - by BeardedSonOfNel

Via Digital Trends
Microsoft seems to be developing a new Xbox One controller specifically for accessibility. A leaked image of the prototype popped up on Twitter thanks to WalkingCat, and Windows Central reports that it has heard the controller will likely be unveiled sometime at E3 or even before the big event.

The prototype above doesn’t resemble a normal gamepad at all. The first thing that stands out are the two large, raised buttons that comprise most of the controller. These “A” and “B” buttons look to be programmable and will help gamers who do better with touch than sight. Without thumbsticks, the four Xbox One face buttons, bumpers, and triggers, the A and B buttons will have to handle a variety of inputs. The three LED lights seem to correspond to the programmable functions, with the white button toggling user control schemes.

Resident Evil Film Director Making a Monster Hunter Movie Starring Milla Jovovich
May 14, 2018 - 4:36 AM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

There's a Monster Hunter movie in the works.

Paul W.S. Anderson, the director of the Resident Evil movies, is at the helm, and he's working once again with Milla Jovovich.

According to Variety, the Monster Hunter movie has a $60m budget and goes into production this September. It shoots in South Africa, in and around Cape Town.

We don't know anything yet about what the film will be about, or how it'll adapt the loot hunt video game. But the people behind it want it to be a film series, like the Resident Evil movies turned out to be. Apparently there's a Resident Evil reboot in the works, too, but this may end up being a TV series rather than a movie.

Fortnite and PUBG Led to Rocketing Headset Sales, Turtle Beach Says
May 12, 2018 - 7:29 AM - by Emabulator

Variety has the story.

While battle royale games like “Fortnite” and “PUBG” continue to court their own successes, it appears the sheer magnitude of players they draw is having a halo effect on headphone sales. Or at least that’s what the head of Turtle Beach tells Variety.

“The business is doing really, really well and what’s driving that — beyond our strategy and being a good quality product — is the ‘Fortnite,’ ‘PUBG,’ and battle royale craze, which has introduced a bunch of new people into games,” said Turtle Beach CEO Juergen Stark.

Turtle Beach, which accounts for nearly 46% of the gaming headset market share, saw a 185% increase in net revenue over the same period last year, according to its first-quarter earnings report released this week. The company was selling so many headsets, Stark said, that it will be spending more than $4 million this quarter on air-freighting new stock into the country.

“We have pulled out all of the stops to catch up our supply,” he said.

The spike in second-quarter sales led the company to increase its forecast for both the next quarter and the year significantly. The news also more than doubled the company’s stock on Wednesday.

Sony E3 Plans; Will Focus On Spider-Man, Last Of Us And Other Exclusives
May 11, 2018 - 11:33 AM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

On today's Sony Blogcast, chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios Shawn Layden revealed the plans for what Sony's bringing to E3 this year. In lieu of a traditional press conference, the publisher will instead focus on "deep dives" for four upcoming exclusives: Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Part II, Spider-Man, and Death Stranding.

Layden also says that Sony will be announcing third-party publishing partners as well as new indie titles. The publisher will not be revealing any new hardware.

Walmart Canada Spoils E3
May 11, 2018 - 7:50 AM - by Evil Avatar

Early listings from Walmart in Canada has revealed several upcoming titles that should be announced during E3 including The Division 2, Rage 2, Borderlands 3, Just Cause 4, LEGO DC Villains, Splinter Cell, Gears of War 5, Forza 5 and a new Assassin's Creed.

I think that this is interesting, but it really sounds like bad news for the Xbox One X since you know Gears of War 5 and Forza 5 are still another full year away, while Sony has several high profile exclusives coming out this year and even more slated for next year.

Metal Gear Survive Sales Not Addressed In Konami's New Earnings Report
May 11, 2018 - 4:29 AM - by Emabulator

Konami had a strong year financially, but GameSpot is reporting it does not know how Metal Gear Survive for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC contributed to that.

Konami launched the Metal Gear spinoff, Metal Gear Survive, back in February on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. How well has it sold? Konami isn't saying, at least not yet, but the signs aren't exactly great.

The Japanese publisher today reported earnings for its fiscal year ended March 31, and the report didn't say anything about the game's performance. The report marks the game's release as a notable event during the year, but says nothing of how well it did in the market.

Konami is of course under no obligation to share a unit sales figure--in fact, many publishers are shying away from announcing hard sales numbers these days. Still, the silence is notable given the size and stature of the Metal Gear franchise.

Not only that, but Konami went out of its way to speak positively about games like PES 2018, which the company said "continued to enjoy stable performance." The line about Metal Gear Survive only notes that the game...came out.

"As for computer and video games, a spinoff title in the Metal Gear series, Metal Gear Survive, was released...," Konami said.

Metal Gear Survive launched on February 20, and it did not make it into the Top 20 list of best-sellers during the month in the United States, according to NPD Group. In the UK, it entered the charts in the No. 6 spot, getting outsold by games far older than it. The game was quickly discounted to $20, which also is a sign that the game might not have performed so well.

[adult swim] Orders 70 More Episodes of "Rick and Morty"

After weeks of speculation regarding the future of the series, Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland made the announcement that adult swim ordered 70 more episodes of the popular series. Roiland announced the development in his usual fashion.

Unless the show's popularity takes a severe nosedive over the next few years, we'll likely be seeing at least five more seasons of the show. Hopefully the larger episode order will mean significantly less downtime between seasons in the future.

Genre-Blending Tactical RPG Iron Danger Announced for PS4, Xbox One and PC
May 09, 2018 - 5:51 PM - by Evil Avatar

Pre-Alpha gameplay trailer for Iron Danger - Tactical RPG with unique time manipulation mechanics

Finnish developer Action Squad Studios announces their new game, Iron Danger, with release of the pre-alpha gameplay trailer. Iron Danger is a genre-blending tactical RPG with simultaneous turns and time rewinding mechanics, providing an uniquely experimental take on combat and puzzles. It is also a game that focuses heavily on story and aims to minimize grinding as a part of the character progress.

The world of Iron Danger draws its inspiration from Nordic mythos, and especially from Kalevala and Finnish folklore. It tells a story of Kipuna, a simple village girl, who becomes imbued with a cosmic power that grants dominion over time and death. The group of unsung heroes, led by Kipuna, must use their wits and power over the time as they’re drawn into the midst of a war between the city of Kalevala, ruled by an immortal, who has renounced the gods, and the armies of the Northlanders driven by their Witch Queen.

Iron Danger will be released for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

In direct response to customer feedback, it will offer the ability to enjoy content in offline and streaming modes.

Harley Quinn Spin-off Movie Will Be "An R-Rated Girl Gang Film," Says Margot Robbie
May 09, 2018 - 8:36 AM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Despite the negative critical reaction to 2016's Suicide Squad, most fans and critics agreed that Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was one of the best characters in the DC universe so far. There have been numerous rumors about what movie we'll see the character in next, but last month it was reported that the spin-off focusing on the all-female Birds of Prey team was moving forward. Now Robbie has revealed more details about the project.

In an interview with Collider, Robbie stated that it was important for Harley to stay part of a group. "I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, 'Harley needs friends,'" she said. "Harley loves interacting with people, so don't ever make her do a standalone film. She's got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn't seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it."

The Birds of Prey movie will be directed by Cathy Yan, who will be the second woman to direct a DC film, after Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins, as well as the first female Asian director to tackle a big-budget superhero movie. Robbie herself requested that the director be a woman, and explained how important it was to give "a female director the chance to do big budget stuff."

She continued: "They always get, 'Here's the tiny little film.' I was like, 'I love action. I love action films. I'm a girl. What, are we meant to only like a specific thing?' So it was a hugely important to find a female director for this, if possible. But at the end of the day--male, female--the best director gets the job and Cathy was the best director."

World of Warcraft DDoS attacker is going to Prison for a Year
May 09, 2018 - 7:45 AM - by Evil Avatar

A 38-year-old Romanian man is going to do a one-year stretch in US federal prison for launching a series DDoS attacks against World of Warcraft in 2010. The US Department of Justice said in a statement that Calin Mateias unleashed his digital fury after getting into an unspecified beef with other players.

"Between February and September 2010, typically in connection with in-game disputes with other players, Mateias launched DDoS attacks on World of Warcraft servers in Europe," the agency said. "Mateias’ DDoS attacks caused World of Warcraft servers to crash and prevented some paying customers from accessing the game."

Mateias was indicted for the crime in 2011 following an investigation by the FBI, but was only extradited to the US to face justice last year. He's been in custody since November 20, 2017. He agreed to plead guilty to a single count of intentional damage to a protected computer; in exchange, the US government agreed to drop separate charges related to an attempted hack and robbery of Ingram Micro in 2004.

Along with the one-year prison sentence, Mateias was also ordered to pay (and, according to NBC Los Angeles, has already paid) $30,000 in restitution to Blizzard to cover the cost of defending against his attacks.

Avengers: Infinity War's Thanos Drops into Fortnite Today
May 08, 2018 - 5:14 AM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

Thanos, the big purple baddie of Avengers: Infinity War, officially arrives in Fortnite today.

The official, Marvel-sponsored crossover between the biggest movie on the planet and the hottest game on the planet sees Thanos arrive as a playable character - if you find his Infinity Gauntlet.

The gauntlet will drop to the ground via a meteor (yes, another one) at the start of a match. Pick it up and you'll transform into Thanos and gain super powers.

You'll be able to punch to knock enemies back and destroy structures, pull off a devastating ground pound, fire a damage-over-time energy blast and super-jump to great heights. Additionally, Thanos has a regenerating shield and doesn't take fall damage.

The trade-off? You won't be able to build, use weapons or items such as launch pads. According to Epic's patch notes, Thanos "has no need for such petty human devices".

Should Thanos be killed, the Infinity Gauntlet will drop for someone else to pick up.

It's Time For Video Game Stories About Kick-Ass Moms, Tomb Raider Writer Says
May 07, 2018 - 6:23 PM - by Emabulator

GameSpot has the story.

Rhianna Pratchett is one of the most veteran and accomplished writers in games. Her most notable work is perhaps the acclaimed 2013 Tomb Raider reboot and its sequel, while she also worked on Mirror's Edge, Heavenly Sword, and the Overlord series. A lifelong gamer herself, Pratchett has seen the evolution of video games over the years. Her work on the new Tomb Raider games depicted what could be described as a more genuine take on the iconic female hero compared to her earlier, over-sexualised days. Video games have made strides in the stories they tell, but they still have some growing up to do, Pratchett tells GameSpot.

A recent trend in gaming, highlighted most recently with Sony's God of War, is what Pratchett calls the "dad-ification of games." That is, as male developers have grown up and had children of their own, they write stories about father-son relationships. These stories may be well-crafted and genuinely compelling, but Pratchett wants to see stories about mothers, too. In an earlier interview, she said it would be interesting to see a Tomb Raider game with Lara Croft as a mother. She told us more about that idea and why it's important to her.

"That was one I kind of threw out there as a thought exercise partly as a reaction to the fact that there are so many father stories being explored in games," she said. "As developers themselves become fathers, [they] start thinking perhaps a little bit more deeply about the world and their place in it. There are very few mother stories. Mothers--and this goes for film and TV as well as games--they often tend to be absent or dead or missing.

"We've had a lot of what gets called the 'dad-ification' of games. You don't really see moms in games, especially not kick-ass moms in games. [Lara Croft as a mom is] one of the things that I thought could be one interesting avenue to explore," Pratchett explained. "I am not a mom and not likely to be a mom, but I have friends who are mothers and I obviously have a mother. I find it very interesting and powerful in itself. And I think the challenges of being a mother, while still being a superhero, are really interesting."

Pokémon Go Fest Returns To Chicago This July
May 07, 2018 - 7:53 AM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

Last summer, Pokémon Go Fest debuted to the tune of a $1,575,000 lawsuit filled by trainers who couldn't catch any Pokémon at the Chicago-based event. Most people couldn't log into the game for more than 15 seconds before it would crash, thanks to the cellular networks being overloaded. Niantic may be wading into troubled waters by bringing the Fest back to Chicago, but it appears the developer has a better idea of how to make the event work in this area. We'll find out what happens when the event returns on July 14 and 15.

The Fest is leaving the somewhat small space of Grant Park for Lincoln Park, which offers a 1.8-mile walking path. Niantic is apparently going to put this tree-covered area to good use with "physical installations and excluisve activities for trainers of all ages." These activities will occur both in and out of the game. One of the in-game discoveries is the appearance of rare Pokémon spawning in the area. Last year, the rarest critter was Unown. The 1.8-mile space is a significant upgrade over last year, but isn't the only place the game can be played. People who purchase a $20 ticket to the event can also catch Pokémon in the surrounding region of Chicago. Tickets go on sale on May 11.

Although few people were able to catch anything at last year's event, Niantic scrambled and expanded the size of it to a two-mile radius across Chicago. As players dispersed to different areas, the networks were freed up, and some stability was finally achieved.

This isn't the only event Niantic is holding this year – it's just one leg of a larger Pokémon Go Summer Tour, which kicks off in Germany on June 30 and concludes in Japan on an unspecified date. The Germany event is held in Westfalenpark, and is free to all trainers who wish to play.

PUBG Halts Personal Item Trades
May 06, 2018 - 5:21 AM - by Emabulator

Eurogamer has the story.

The ability to trade in-game items between players has been switched off in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds for the foreseeable future - to stop the sale of these items using third-party sites.

In a new blog, PUBG Corp. called the decision a "temporary" measure, but there was no mention of how it might solve the problem, or what timeframe this could take.

To clarify, this does not involve the sale of items via the Steam marketplace. This is about the "personal trade" system which PUBG Corp. says was "supposed to allow friends to trade items without any costs attached".

Using third-party sites was "essentially an abuse of the system", the developer concluded. "To prevent this, we're temporarily turning off personal trades while we search for a better solution. Once we figure out a way to prevent abuse, the restriction will be lifted."

It's an interesting stance to take, especially in the wake of the headlines generated last year surrounding third-party sites which enabled gambling, and the recent moves to investigate the practice.

The ability to sell in-game items outside of Steam - where prices can be set at whatever the seller wishes - is one thing. The ability to encourage gambling on these items - and the ability to attract headlines surrounding this practice - is another.

Last year, the Gambling Commission warned parents about gambling websites, calling them "parasites feeding off popular video games".

Activision Investing More Resources In Call Of Duty On PC This Year
May 05, 2018 - 2:40 PM - by Emabulator

Game Informer has the story.

During Activision's earnings call, the Call of Duty developer talked a little bit about Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 on PC.

Activision Blizzard CEO Coddy Johnson was speaking about the upcoming Black Ops 4 and the the desire to have the game sell well on every platform. Johnson mentioned that the company has "invested significant dedicated resources and design time" in to the PC version to make sure it does well. "We want to make sure we can deliver a great PC game to serve that community," Johnson said.

Johnson did not get specific about what exactly they are doing, but it does sound like the company is aware of its reputation with Call of Duty in the PC space. Ever since Acitivision's decision to eschew dedicated servers with Modern Warfare 2, the publisher has struggled with getting PC gamers to embrace the series as well as they had hoped.
Could it be they don't want to release a shoddy port on Battle.net, where games are actually good?

George Lucas Changed A Scene In Solo: A Star Wars Story
May 05, 2018 - 2:28 PM - by Emabulator

Ron Howard listens to his elders. GameSpot has the story.

Lucasfilm under the Disney label has become the new caretakers of the Star Wars franchise, but original visionary George Lucas still has some pull. Ron Howard, who directed the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story, revealed that his old colleague Lucas had some feedback for a scene, and he took it.

"We were doing a scene and he was trying to stay out of the way, but he did lean over and he said, 'You know what Han would really do there?'" Howard said on The Late Show (via EW). "I said, 'What?' And he told me the joke, he gave me a little joke. And I said [to the crew], 'Hey, guess what? Here's what we're gonna do in the next take.' So I know when I hear a good idea."

Given the tone of the anecdote, it seems that Lucas' suggestion likely made the cut--though we'll probably have to hear some follow-up from Howard on which quip in particular sprung from the mind of the series creator. Lucas did create Han Solo, and this movie is meant to be a throwback to the iconic rogue, so it makes sense that he'd have thoughts on how to steer the characterization.

Of course, Lucas has seemed at times peevish at the direction of the new films under Disney's direction. When The Force Awakens released, he made comments indicating frustration that the company had deviated from his own vision for the series. More recently, he said The Last Jedi was "beautifully made" but stopped short of any further thoughts.
