Yakuza: Like a Dragon Coming to the West in 2020
Sep 12, 2019 - 11:55 AM - by Evil Avatar

Quote:
Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the Next Step in the Acclaimed Yakuza Series, Heads to the West in 2020!

SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio are happy to announce that the latest entry in the RGG / Yakuza series, Yakuza: Like a Dragon (Japanese title - Ryu Ga Gotoku 7) is releasing in Japan on January 16, 2020, for the PlayStation 4, with a Western launch planned for 2020. Actors Shinichi Tsutsumi, Ken Yasuda, and Kiichi Nakai will be lending their appearances and voices to the game's main cast members, with Kazuhiro Nakaya voicing the game's main protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon introduces a new main protagonist for the first time since the series' inception over a decade ago - Ichiban Kasuga, a low-level yakuza member looking to prove his self-worth, and follows him and his motley crew of unlikely allies as they attempt to rise from rags to riches in this modern human drama.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon is much more than just a new chapter in the Yakuza series. Much like the new English title itself, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a complete reimagining of the franchise, a landmark to coincide with the series' 15th anniversary. With the bulk of the game taking place in the large-scale, painstakingly-realized setting of Ijincho in Yokohama, players will explore an entirely new side of Japan never-before-seen in the series. Not only that, but Yakuza: Like a Dragon's combat system has undergone a major overhaul, combining Yakuza's established brawling action with a turn-based RPG battle system.

Sega Genesis Mini Reviews
Sep 12, 2019 - 7:32 AM - by Evil Avatar

IGN.com.

Quote:
The Sega Genesis Mini is the closest thing we have to a perfect all-in-one mini console so far. There are a few weird emulation issues here and there, but the sheer number of games and its delightful interface far outshines any graphical hiccups in these classic games. The quiet inclusion of different ROMs for different regions is one of those things that makes no sense at all to include while simultaneously making it feel even more lovingly crafted and special. It's hard to find much to really dislike about the Genesis Mini. The decision to include the 3-button controllers rather than the later 6-button ones is a bummer, but it only really matters for Street Fighter II. Even if I was more of a SNES kid growing up, the Genesis Mini is now my favorite retro mini console.
Destructoid.

Quote:
Any opportunity to play with a Sega Genesis was mesmerizing and magical: to the point where I even rented one at Blockbuster (with QuackShot!) to help with the withdrawals. But as time went on I didn't have to worry about missing out, as Sega put their classics on pretty much every device known to man. The Sega Genesis Mini is yet another way to play them, but manages to rise to the level of the beloved Nintendo Classic Editions to cement its place in Mini history.
Engadget.

Quote:
So here's the thing: if you still have room in your life for more gaming nostalgia, or maybe if you were a Genesis kid and not a Nintendo kid, then this console is definitely for you. If you're curious about it, well, then you can't go wrong. It's $79.99, and you get a lot of games, plus a strong shot of the '90s distilled -- brace yourself for a lot of sassy animal mascots, graffiti-fonts, "tubular" slang, whatever the hell Earthworm Jim was, plus, of course ToeJam and Earl and its early '90s funk. You'll have a rad time.
CNET.com.

Quote:
But the Sega Genesis Mini is the Sega retro console you've been waiting for. Simply put: If you want to play some great Sega Genesis games, a well-spent $80 here gets you 40 well-picked ones.
Gamespot.

Quote:
So the Mini has some issues, and for M2 fans it might be a little disappointing to see that it falls short of the team's most ambitious retro projects from the past, but for the most part the Mini is a very satisfying little console. It's got the looks, it's got a great selection of games that largely play faithful to the original experience, and it's priced just right at $80--though you may disagree if the six-button games like Street Fighter II are critical factors. Genesis fans have waited a long time for a system like this, and for once, we're happy to say that the latest official Genesis console is one worth buying.
Sega Genesis Mini on Amazon.

Anyone picking one up? I'm still on the fence about the Atari Flashback and I'm saving most of my money for the full-sized C64 Mini.

The Evil Avatar Control Review
Sep 11, 2019 - 1:18 PM - by Evil Avatar

After gaining the rights back to Alan Wake, Remedy Entertainment is back with another oddball 3rd person shooter, Control. Writer Aaron Birch is here to give us a tour of the Oldest House.

Quote:
As somewhat mysterious protagonist, Jesse Faden, a woman with an uncertain past at the beginning of the game, you find yourself in the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Control. This super secret arm of the government is responsible for researching the paranormal. In fact, the very building the organisation calls home is actually some form of pocket dimension, contained in an nigh on invisible building in the middle of New York. Inside this building, called the Oldest House, the laws of reality cease to be constrained, and its shifting hallways and portals to different dimensions are both a source of intense research, and a whole heap of potential danger to the outside world.

Control Content Roadmap: Fall 2019 - Mid 2020
Sep 11, 2019 - 12:57 PM - by Evil Avatar

Quote:
Control – What’s Next? Free DLC content includes Photo Mode and a challenging new game mode

Now that Control has launched and we’ve been able to get a few updates out of the way, it’s time to take a look at what’s coming next. We will continue to build on the world of Control, creating additional game content all the way through 2020. We already have a small team in place at Remedy that’s busy working on post-launch content.

Here’s a brief overview of what’s coming to Control...

First up, while some crafty PC players “unlocked” their own versions of this already, we are working on a much-desired Photo Mode, which will enable you to take some awesome snapshots of Jesse in the Oldest House. Make sure you unlock all of her costumes to flex by the time the Photo Mode arrives this fall. We’ll have more information on this soon.

New Game Mode

In December, we will release a new game mode for Control that we are currently calling Expeditions. This will be a challenging new end-game mode in which Jesse must help Security Chief Arish explore the mysterious Formation and its strange surroundings. Here you will face the some the greatest challenges that the Oldest House can throw at you. You will need the best gear and abilities to survive. Expeditions is free for all players.

Expansions

Moving ahead to 2020, there will be two full, paid expansions that our team is hard at work creating: The Foundation and AWE. Both of these will offer new story missions, enemies, and game mechanics, and take place in new locations within the Oldest House.

The Foundation will delve into the history of the Oldest House. At the request of the ever-mysterious Board, Jesse must explore what lies beneath the Bureau as she returns order to the Foundation and the Oldest House itself. Expect things to get weird.

The second expansion, AWE, will take Jesse into a new part of the Oldest House, the Investigations Sector, where the Bureau closely examines Altered World Events.

Finally, we would like to thank everyone from press to fans and the entire community for your support and feedback. The amazing response to Control means the world for us. Keep it coming!

200 more GameStop Stores Set to Close, with More to Follow
Sep 11, 2019 - 6:30 AM - by Evil Avatar

Quote:
In a conference call with investors today the team at video game and knick-knack retailer GameStop confirmed plans to close 180-200 "underperforming" stores this year, with more to come in the years ahead.

That second bit is the more notable part of this news, as GamesIndustry reports that a GameStop representative alluded to plans for implementing a new, metrics-driven approach to gauging store performance that will lead to many more closures.

"We have a clear opportunity to improve our overall profitability by de-densifying our chain," the representative said during the call. "And while these [180-200] closures were more opportunistic, we are applying a more definitive, analytic approach, including profit levels and sales transferability, that we expect will yield a much larger tranche of closures over the coming 12 to 24 months."

KFC Is Making A Colonel Sanders Dating Sim Game
Sep 10, 2019 - 8:51 AM - by Evil Avatar

Quote:
Unless this is a very early April Fools joke, KFC (yes, that KFC, the fast-food chicken chain) is publishing a dating sim called I Love You, Colonel Sanders! A Finger Lickin' Good Dating Simulator. What even is 2019 anymore?

"From the same people who brought you the bucket of chicken, comes the world’s first Colonel Sanders dating simulator," the game's bizarre product description says on Steam. You play as a promising culinary student as you try to date your classmate, Colonel Sanders. Will the Kentucky fried chicken mogul choose you to be his business partner? Or maybe something much more intimate? "Throughout your journey, you'll be faced with life-changing decisions that will affect your chances of friendship and love. But be careful! Your choices have real consequences with real animated characters' feelings at stake."

I Love You, Colonel Sanders! A Finger Lickin' Good Dating Simulator promises to feature nine lovable characters, a secret ending, secret recipes, cooking battles, battle battles, 11 herbs and spices, a dateable Colonel Sanders, and much more. If the writing in-game is as humorous as it is in this product description then the whole thing should be genuinely funny. The art style in the trailer is actually kind of amazing, too. And there's a dog.

RAGE 2 First Expansion Rise of the Ghosts Launches on September 26th
Sep 10, 2019 - 8:29 AM - by Evil Avatar

Quote:
RAGE 2 'Rise of the Ghosts' Launch Details

An old threat has returned to haunt the wasteland once again in RAGE 2’s first major expansion. Explore a brand-new region, face a lethal new faction, and gain access to a new weapon and ability in Rise of the Ghosts. Get more details on Rise of the Ghosts and how you can get in on the action below.

Walker Ain’t Afraid of No Ghosts

The Ghosts were once a terror in the wasteland. Ruthless, vicious, tactical and cruel, they took what they wanted and left no survivors. Following the Authority Wars, they were nowhere to be found. At the time, many people assumed they had simply been wiped out and they began to fade into wasteland legend. In reality, they had found a higher calling; a strange woman named Iris promised them power and glory if they did everything she said. Iris and the Ghosts fled to the Overgrown City, where for years they underwent intensive brainwashing and were subjected to experiments that left them with powerful and mysterious nanotrite abilities.

Now they’re ready to reclaim their place in the wasteland. Under the watchful eyes of Iris, the Ghosts will prove to be a formidable new foe for Ranger Walker. He’ll need to navigate a huge new region called the Overgrown City and put a stop to their uprising before the Ghosts can gain a foothold in the wasteland. Luckily, he’ll have the new Void ability and the Feltrite Laser Launcher to add to his already-impressive arsenal. Rise of the Ghosts also introduces the new Ghost Motorcycle to the game, which players will be able to find in the Overgrown City and bring back to their Garage.

When, Where & How

Rise of the Ghosts will launch on all platforms on September 19. Download it from the in-game store for 1500 RAGE Coins ($15). You need to be online and signed into your BNET account to access the in-game store.

• New story
• New enemy faction – Ghosts
• New region to explore – Overgrown City

Game Developer Alec Holowka Commits Suicide After #MeToo Twitter Accusation
Sep 06, 2019 - 4:30 AM - by vallor

On August 26th Alec Holowka, one of the co-creators of the indie hit "Night In The Woods" suffered a #MeToo accusation via Twitter and Video Game press from Zoe Quinn, the subject of the "5 Guys" post which was the genesis of Gamergate.

From Gamerants:

Quote:
A few days ago, Zoe Quinn accused Night in the Woods developer Alec Holowka of abusing her. Shortly thereafter, the Night in the Woods team cut ties with Holowka, and announced that the game he was working on with them had been canceled. Now we have learned that Holowka has passed away, as announced by his sister Eileen Holowka on Twitter.
Here is a video from The Quartering discussing the events.

Some feel this is part of an overall campaign for Zoe to get back in the spotlight and increase her Patreon revenue, which has dried up, and the death was just a happy accident drawing more attention her way.

Creative director Ikumi Nakamura has very suddenly announced that she's left Tango Gameworks.

After 9 years as Creative director & Art Director at Tango and Zenimax - I felt here is one of ends of the journeys . I learned from the talented people I've worked with and I respect. 🙏😊 Contact me if anyone wants to work with me!

The tweet is a little muddled thanks to the language barrier, but Bethesda confirmed that Nakamura has left the studio and is no longer working on GhostWire: Tokyo. "We can confirm that Nakamura-san has decided to leave Tango and we wish her the best of luck in whatever is next for her," a rep said. "Tango continues to be led by the legendary Shinji Mikami and his talented team in the development of Ghostwire: Tokyo. We look forward to sharing more on what they’re creating in the coming months."

"I DO NOT want to forget appreciation and respect to everything," Nakamura wrote in a followup tweet. "I've also decided to proceed to the new world I can keep myself happy and somebody require me. Now the huge world is showing me infinite possibilities, like an open world video game. Life in NOT linear. "

Cyberpunk 2077 to add Multiplayer
Sep 04, 2019 - 5:24 PM - by Evil Avatar

Quote:
1/2 Until now, the only thing we said about multi was that it was in R&D. As we’re getting closer to launching ‘single player’ Cyberpunk 2077 in Apr. 2020, we’d like to confirm that multiplayer's in the works! If you feel like lending us your skills apply: http://bit.ly/multiCP

2/2 The plan for now is to deliver Cyberpunk 2077 in April, then follow up with DLCs (free!) and single player content, and — once we’re done — invite you for some multiplayer action.

Telltale Games Coming Back Under New Ownership
Aug 28, 2019 - 6:54 AM - by Evil Avatar

Quote:
Veteran Game Industry Executives Come Together to Purchase Telltale Games

LCG Entertainment, a holding company that will be doing business as Telltale Games, today announced that it has purchased the defunct studio’s key assets, trademarks, technology, and select intellectual properties with the intent of re-releasing select games from the studio’s back catalog and developing new games in some of the company’s best-selling brands. The purchase, led by Jamie Ottilie and Brian Waddle, was made possible by a pool of investors and advisors comprised of well-known names in the games industry including Chris Kingsley, Lyle Hall, Tobias Sjögren, Athlon Games (as a shareholder and publishing partner), and several additional partners.

Originally founded in 2004, Telltale Games became synonymous with storytelling, pioneering the episodic game format, and changing the way the games medium embraced narrative. Following a string of successful and award-winning game series based on television and film licenses and original IPs, the game developer and publisher shuttered in October of last year, leaving disappointed fans in its wake.

“All of us were big fans of the games Telltale created, as we strongly believe in games as a storytelling medium and nobody did it better,” said Jamie Ottilie, CEO of the new Telltale Games. “Even now, when you see a game with strong narrative, it’s always compared to Telltale, so it’s no surprise that players and industry colleagues alike mourned the studio’s closure. We believe there is still so much life to the brand and its franchises, and we look forward to building upon the company’s storytelling legacy.”

The new Telltale Games will be headquartered in Malibu with a satellite office in Corte Madera, California. Day-to-day operations will be handled by Ottilie and Waddle, with Ottilie responsible for studio management and technology, and Waddle running business development, finance, and operations. Both will work closely with Athlon, who will serve as the marketing and publishing partner on most of the company’s back catalog and new releases, freeing up Telltale to focus on development and studio growth.

Key talent from the original company has been hired or contracted by the new Telltale. The new company will be based on a streamlined structure with plans for strategic growth and a focus on its core and new IP’s. No further details are being released about the Telltale assets purchase price. News regarding the reissue of specific back catalog titles and new games in existing IP’s will be announced in the coming weeks.

“There is still a huge fanbase of Telltale players and that’s one of the main reasons we decided to make this investment,” said Brian Waddle, chief revenue officer for the new Telltale Games. “It’s hard to see your favorite games disappear or not get the sequels they deserve, so we thank everyone for their patience and support. We’ve got some exciting things to share soon. We’ll try not to keep them waiting too long, but we think fans will be pleased.”

GameDaily Connect is hosting a fireside chat with Jamie Ottilie discussing the relaunch of Telltale Games today at its conference at 4:30 pm in the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, California. To learn more about the new Telltale Games, please visit Telltale.com.
